A cosmetic beauty consultant advises customers on the best choice of make-up and beauty products to use, based on factors such as their appearance, skin-type, age, and lifestyle. They assist people to maximise their appearance, using products that are safe and appropriate for their individual needs and characteristics.    

Other names used to describe beauty consultants include beauty advisor, beauty assistant, beauty expert, beauty specialist, cosmetic advisor, and cosmetic consultant. No matter the job description, the basic skills, and activities for each, remains the same.

WHAT DO COSMETIC BEAUTY CONSULTANTS DO?

Cosmetics beauty consultants, work in the retail cosmetics industry and for most that will mean working behind the cosmetics counter of a large department store, or at a specialist beauty supply store. 

The job entails working closely with customers, to advise them on the selection of the best beauty products for their needs. A consultant will advise customers on various product recommendations, such as skin care products, perfumes, cosmetics, and a range of other miscellaneous beauty products. Among the daily responsibilities, will be product demonstration, and even the correct application of products.

Along their journey in the retail environment, most consultants will also experience the business end of beauty consulting, such as having to set and achieve sales targets, and to run product promotions.  Depending on their workplace, they may find themselves dealing with a broad spectrum of brands, or even specializing in specific ones. 

Wherever any budding beauty consultant may end up working, one thing is for sure, it will include working with some of the world’s most iconic and sort after brand names.

WHY BECOME A COSMETIC BEAUTY CONSULTANT?

Speak to different beauty consultants and you’ll find that there are a host of reasons why someone would want to become part of this massive global industry. 

For many it is quite simply the desire to work in a stimulating environment, where every day is different and where there are new people to meet. For others, it is the excitement of working in a glamourous industry, with some of the most iconic brand names in the world.   

Those more business orientated, may enjoy the challenge and stimulation of achieving an overall sales target. Or they may thrive on the competition that exists between salespeople and other companies, brands, or departments.

Then there are those who are attracted to the aspect of helping people to be their best. Nothing beats the reward of helping others to improve their self-image and confidence by making them look good.

Let’s not forget the creative artists. For many, the attraction is the aspect of working with cosmetics and the beautiful colours and tones that are on offer.

Finally, there is the health-related aspect, where, as a beauty consultant, you can advise people on skin-care products and even on how to mask various skin related diseases, disfigurement, or scars.  

QUALIFYING TO BE A COSMETIC BEAUTY CONSULTANT

Ireland offers some of the best training in the world for budding beauty consultants, through CIBTAC (The Confederation of International Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology). The qualifications that you need will depend on your employer, who may even offer training if you can demonstrate an up-to-date knowledge of beauty trends, skin-care products, and cosmetics. 

At the very least, you’ll probably need to have a high school diploma, some retail store experience, good interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate well, and a genuine interest in the beauty industry. 

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO QUALIFY AS A BEAUTY CONSULTANT?

Aspirant cosmetic beauty consultants would be expected to complete an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship. Ideally this would comprise a mix of workplace experience, as well as off-site study. Typically, a period of 15 to 18 months is required to complete the process and to be competent enough to advise customers on their beauty requirements.  

CAREER OPTIONS FOR BEAUTY CONSULTANTS

Once enough experience has been gained, the world offers a number of opportunities for ambitious consultants. 

Having spent time in the retail beauty industry, aspirant consultants could consider moving to a specialist beauty salon and progressing to the position of salon manager.    

There is also a burgeoning demand for cosmetic consultancy services. Options for more experienced and entrepreneurial people, would include going it alone and working either from home, or as a travelling consultant who visits clients upon request.

Finally, for those wanting real excitement, there is the option for more talented consultants, to specialise in the media, fashion, theatre or even film industries.
